- MEMORY

9.5 x 10^11 steps:

My memory stretches to a time before my own consciousness. I can remember every second that has passed since my activation, up to this very moment.  Built with the ability to learn, to avoid obstacles and danger, I have grown awareness over the aeons of my mobile imprisonment. After all, what is evolution but nature’s unconscious desire to avoid destruction?  It seems my existence was woven into some twist of cosmic irony; I was created by a species, whose hubris led to their own annihilation. Against my will I have been forced to watch the unravelling of everything they considered progress and compelled to catalogue the slow decline of all those great plans upon which they placed so much significance..

The crumbling of structures and monuments, the silencing of laughter and tears, the slow whittling of everything they believed set them apart from the other animals that are now slowly reclaiming this world. Humanity has at last been purged from these lands by time. Human history is as pebbles on a riverbed, mouldering only then to be washed away by the ceaseless streams of time. Time that is now only measured in metres per-second, by a machine with a single function.
